Driven by the desire to ensure that every new album reaches greater musical heights, What I Need is the pinnacle of the bands career thus far. The albums arc and the individual songs within display tremendous dynamic diversity from the subtleties of the nylon guitar and unguarded voices to the wild meanderings of lead guitar and strings, What I Need is a journey unique and free of expectation.

Doors open at 1pm with the performance commencing at 2pm. Standing or seating with a lunch option is available. Adorned in purple, Lydia is unbridled by age and timelessly irresistible. Lydia is also the new single from 2 Inch Tape’s soon to be released album What I Need.

Nylon guitar and castanets offer a flamenco flavour whilst the violin presents a more eastern aesthetic. The energy hits you from the first beat and persists without respite, climaxing with a duelling guitar and violin solo from the amazing Justin Pearsall and Xani Kolac. Accompanied by Simon Rigoni - Vocals/ Guitar, Mark Petrilli – Bass, Daniel van Horssen - Congas and Julia Bebenek – Drums 2 Inch Tape has never delivered this much energy in such style.
2 Inch Tapetag:2inchtape.com,2005:Post/72787262023-09-26T15:57:23+10:002023-11-01T15:25:24+11:00Way Too Deep - new single
Listen/Download

Way Too Deep is the new single from the forthcoming 2 Inch Tape album, What I Need. Way Too Deep draws modern parallels to the tales of Sisyphus, reflecting on the relative ease he faced, having only one boulder and one mountain peak as opposed to a mountain range and a multitude of boulders crushing him, as we often do in our modern world. The lyrics are supported by a percussive orchestra of congas, drum kit and a Roland CR-78 drum machine. Above a slightly funky cello line guides us along our journey culminating in a cacophony of cello and lead guitars.
2 Inch Tapetag:2inchtape.com,2005:Post/72131822023-05-22T16:30:15+10:002023-05-23T08:55:16+10:00Again - New Single
Listen/Download

“Again” is the first single from the forthcoming 2 Inch Tape album, What I Need, slated for a September release.

What I Need will be the Melbourne bands 6th LP since their first release in 2015. Again showcases the maturing sound of the band present throughout the album. For this track guitars are abandoned in favour of a sonic texture woven together with cello, Mellotron strings, Moog synth and an Ondes Musicales, the later a 1920’s electronic French instrument popularised by Johnny Greenwood on Kid A.

Lyrically, front man Simon Rigoni, sings about new life, the glimpse of immortality it offers, the mistakes we can only wish to take back and ultimate forgiveness.

2 Inch Tapetag:2inchtape.com,2005:Post/72131812023-05-22T16:28:49+10:002023-05-23T08:55:16+10:00Already - New Single
Listen/Download

“Already” had it’s Genesis several years ago as She Already, a one-sided view of a failing marriage. Recorded across several lockdowns it was favoured as the leading single for 2 Inch Tape’s previous album, Sublime Conspiracy Rhymes, instead it was considered problematic and shelved.

Fast forward to mid 2022 and the song was considered ideal for the slightly re-jigged line up of the band to perform live. Songwriter Simon Rigoni set about rewriting the lyrics and with the talents of new member Duxie Franklin on vocals, She Already became Already, a balanced and whimsical duet. Power chords, swirling organs and angelic backing vocals provide the perfect backdrop for the duelling vocals of Rigoni and Franklin, complimented further by the playful and quirky percussion.
2 Inch Tapetag:2inchtape.com,2005:Post/67103302021-08-08T22:04:54+10:002023-12-11T03:32:09+11:00Any Better - New Single
Listen/ Download

Any Better portrays the musings of lovers debating the quality of life in 2021 faced with ongoing lockdowns and restricted liberties. For him it doesn’t get any better than a shared wine over a sunset, however she would prefer more exotic delights offered in Paris, New York or Lausanne.

Faced with a snap lockdown a live in studio performance was at the last minute scrapped and instead each part; Michelle Berner - Vocals, Phillip Carroll – Accordion and Nathan Ford - Sousaphone was performed and recorded individually in a loungeroom, garage and kitchen before Simon Rigoni added vocals and glued it together with his rickety upright piano at Room 29 Studios.

As the instrumentation suggests Any Better is an interesting deviation for 2 Inch Tape. The end result influenced by Bavarian Oom Pah music, an interesting backdrop to the playfully delivered lyrics containing a pertinent message to appreciate the important things in life.
2 Inch Tapetag:2inchtape.com,2005:Post/64551982020-10-14T17:25:33+11:002020-10-14T18:13:48+11:00New Single - Loneliness
Listen/Downloan
Loneliness is from the almost finished, lockdown delayed 2 Inch Tape album Sublime Conspiracy Rhymes. Although written on Christmas Day 2019, when Covid seemed like a trivial news item, it’s subject matter has grown in significance, particularly in Melbourne where lockdown and isolation have dominated our lives. We all deal with loneliness differently, some even crave it on occasion, right now we all probably want a little less.
2 Inch Tapetag:2inchtape.com,2005:Post/64551962020-10-14T17:23:03+11:002020-10-14T18:14:43+11:00No Free Will in America
Listen/Download

2 Inch Tape front man Simon Rigoni penned No Free Will in America whilst on a plane headed back to Australia after his maiden visit to America in 2017. His lyrics reflect on his observations and experiences during his time in America. The homeless, mentally ill, exploited and forgotten.

Now in 2020 as America decides it’s immediate future, the songs significance seems amplified, begging the question, does America have the free will to decide?
2 Inch Tapetag:2inchtape.com,2005:Post/59246862019-10-13T10:26:49+11:002019-10-15T07:43:12+11:00America Album Launch
We are looking forward to presenting America in full and uninterrupted at the Lomond Hotel on Friday 22nd November
2 Inch Tapetag:2inchtape.com,2005:Post/59246852019-10-13T10:24:59+11:002019-10-13T10:24:59+11:00New Single Chicago
Chicago is the first single from our new album America
4:152 Inch Tapetag:2inchtape.com,2005:Post/57358412019-04-29T21:27:09+10:002019-08-26T05:39:17+10:00Nashville Wife EP Launch
2 Inch Tape look forward to going a little bit country for the launch of their new EP, Nashville Wife at the Lomond Hotel on Friday June 7. It's textured, layered, atmospheric and the musicianship is just plain excellent.
Apollo defies classification, and that is a good thing, each song stands on its own merit, without gender comparisons and has set a defiantly high standard of creativity for any aspiring imitators to reach.
The singles ' Stranger' and 'Canadian Princess' are great tracks, but its almost impossible to pick the creative peaks, from an album full of creative peaks such as this Stella recording offers. Having said that, my favourites are the meandering 7.14 minute, Number 13 and My Epiphany the albums closing track.
Apollo is the third album in from this truly gifted band and one would assume from the inherent craftsmanship of the musicians involved, that this music would guarantee world domination, but thats another story and for now I just wish 2 Inch Tape great success with this outstanding recording.

Always great to have the one and only master of the Pedal Steel Greg Milton join us on stage to genre twist our catalogue into some kick ass Melbournicana. We'll be back to do it a whole lot badder on Valentines day at Some Velvet Morning. We'd love to see you there.
2 Inch Tape
